Don't Be Afraid, Circumcision Gives Many Health Benefits
Jakarta, In addition to being obligatory for Islam and several other religious beliefs, circumcision has health benefits. Although at first glance the act of cutting the foreskin of the penis looks terrible, in fact there are many scientific studies that show circumcision is actually very necessary.
“The benefit can be to avoid the accumulation of dirt. Because after urinating, usually there is still left in the skin (foreskin of the penis) which can eventually cause chronic irritation. This chronic irritation can be a risk of penile cancer, “said DR. dr. Nur Rasyid, SpU(K) Head of the Urology Department of RSCM when contacted by detikHealth as written Wednesday (26/6/2013).
In men who are not circumcised, bacteria and germs are more easily collected behind the foreskin of the penis. Moreover, this section often produces fluid that triggers the accumulation of dirt. This is why the tip of the penis needs to be cleaned, especially in uncircumcised men.
Even in men who have a certain disorder called phimosis, the genitals must be circumcised. Phimosis is a condition in which the skin of the penis attaches to the head of the penis. As a result, the head of the penis can not open or even block the urinary tract.
This condition makes the dirt produced by the foreskin glands accumulate around the head of the penis or is called smegma. If left unchecked, germs or bacteria that accumulate will propagate to the urinary tract and eventually lead to infection. To overcome this, circumcision is absolutely necessary.
However, Dr. Rasyid emphasized that it does not mean that men who are not circumcised are at risk of developing penile cancer. But for men, it is better to undergo circumcision to minimize the risk. Because there are several other diseases that can be reduced by circumcision.
"Of course circumcision has many benefits. But what is certain, circumcision is useful in preventing penile cancer, preventing infection of the penis, and there is one study that states circumcision can reduce the risk of HIV infection. However, it is uncertain or unclear,” said Dr. Eddy Karta, SpKK, a skin and genital specialist at RSCM.
Some studies have found that circumcision can reduce the risk of HIV by changing the ecosystem around the penis. When the foreskin is removed, the amount of oxygen present in the penis increases while decreasing its moisture. This condition makes the virus reluctant to occupy it.
